Excelsior moves up fireworks, Eden Prairie cancels Fourth of July event with rain expected

Due to heavy rain expected throughout Thursday, Fourth of July plans are changing in some Minnesota cities.

The City of Excelsior has decided to move up its Fourth of July Lake Minnetonka Fireworks show to Wednesday evening, while Eden Prairie's Fourth of July event has been canceled.

Excelsior decided on the date change after discussing it with the National Weather Service Twin Cities and other departments. It was announced on Facebook , confirming that the fireworks show will occur at Excelsior Commons at 9:30 p.m.

Before the fireworks show, food vendors will be in the area, starting at 3 p.m.

Despite the schedule change, the city's Firecracker race and kid's parade will still be held on Thursday, July 4th, and registration for the race is still open .

Eden Prairie announced the cancellation of its Independence Day festivities due to a "forecast for heavy rain." The city's "Sparklefest " will still go ahead Wednesday starting at 6 p.m. It promises free kids' activities, food trucks, and a drone show.

According to the National Weather Service , "multiple rounds of thunderstorms" will last through Friday morning. Due to prior wet conditions and the high amount of rainfall in the past couple of weeks, flash flooding is expected.

Waconia's fireworks display will be today at dusk at Waconia Regional Park. Chanhassen's fireworks show will also be rescheduled for July 12 at 10:00 p.m. However, all other events for Chanhassen remain as scheduled.
