Does Your Maine Dog Have These Spots? Don’t Panic!
According to the Veterinary Clinic in Brunswick, they've been getting a lot of calls about these spots that look like awful tick bites! They are not... With Memorial Day weekend upon us, I think of two things. One is that you never know what you'll get from the weather. You could be looking at the most beautiful weekend ever, or (most likely) there will be at least a day of rain. The second thing that Memorial Day weekend means is the start of the unrelenting blackfly season! Black flies are the absolute worst! They literally will change your plans! Or you could always try to win the war. Good luck with that.

John Vander: ‘Postcards From Sicily’
New works on paper by John Vander at Gold/Smith Gallery July 29 to Sept. 18. Said Vander, “This is a visual remembrance of a short trip to the island of Sicily this year in January. The classical and baroque share a loving cup of the local wine. Everything was very different from Tuscany. The sky was a deeper clearer blue, the sea a transparent turquoise and all the colors seemed to be electrified. Arriving at night, the half moon rising over the sea, heading to Mount Etna from Catania Airport, with its curve parallel to the sea was a profound and magical preface of things to come. I returned to Tuscany and began painting this new and extremely colorful experience.
Zu Bakery Owner Barak Olins’s Favorite Maine Place
For 22 years, Barak Olins ran Zu Bakery out of a South Freeport barn equipped with a wood-fired oven, toiling into the wee hours on Friday night to prepare for the Brunswick Farmers’ Market on Saturday morning. After he and his family moved from South Freeport to Portland, in 2012, Olins slept on a cot in the barn on Friday nights. At the market, “I saw these vendors who were older than me slowing down, and I was scared,” Olins says. So, in 2022, he opened a small Portland shop that operates on a schedule that doesn’t necessitate nocturnal baking. Instead, the staff bakes throughout the day, offering pastries at 9 a.m., various breads between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and pizzas and focaccia starting at 1 p.m. “For the most part, people have embraced the schedule,” Olins says. “And even said, ‘I appreciate that you don’t want to come in at 3 a.m.’”
Color and Joy Bloom at Waldoboro Flower Farm
For Ann Marie Gallant, a painter and saleswoman who five years ago added the title of “flower farmer” to her resume, the intensive and sometimes arduous work of her new trade is well worthwhile to add a measure of beauty to the world. Walking among the fields of...
