    Stafford police release name of Edison man, 24, killed in Route 72 crash Saturday night

    STAFFORD - Police have identified the 24-year-old Edison man who died following a fiery two-vehicle crash in the eastbound lanes of Route 72 Saturday night .

    Kevin Scoda was driving east in a 2023 Chevrolet Corvette when the car collided with an eastbound 2018 Subaru driven by 26-year-old Justin Layer of Barnegat, police said.

    The Corvette veered off the road and crashed into a utility pole, becoming engulfed in flames, police said.

    Before police and EMS arrived, unidentified passersby helped Scoda out of the Corvette, police said.

    He was taken to Southern Ocean Medical Center in Stafford where he died of his injuries. There was no word on any injuries suffered by Layer.

    Traffic was routed off Route 72 eastbound for about two hours during the investigation Saturday night.

    Scoda graduted with a bachelor's degree in 2022 from Seton Hall University's Stillman School of Business, according to his obituary .

    He worked as a vice president in his family's business, Federal Metals and Alloys, a scrap recycler in South Plainfield.
