Otsego County woman accused of abandoning 6 animals

EDMESTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – An Edmeston woman is facing several charges after allegedly neglecting to care for her animals.

The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of Sandra Truax, 65, following an investigation into an animal cruelty complaint received on May 31.

According to investigators, Truax’s apartment was found to be in a deplorable condition with debris, urine and feces throughout the residence. Five cats and one dog were also located in the apartment with no food or water for an unknown length of time. Two cats were found inside small pet carriers, one of which was dead. Another cat was found deceased inside the apartment as well.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Susquehanna SPCA. A veterinarian from the SPCA evaluated the animals and determined them to be underweight and suffering from mild dehydration.

Truax was arrested and charged with two counts of Aggravated Cruelty to Animals, six counts of Torture/Injure/Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance, and six counts of Abandonment of Animals.

Truax was processed and issues an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Edmeston Court at a later date.
