In a horrifying case of interstate violence, authorities have arrested a Florida man for allegedly hiring two Florida individuals to carry out a vicious acid attack on his ex-girlfriend in New Jersey.

Oakland Park, FL – In a horrifying incident spanning state lines, a Florida man has been arrested for allegedly orchestrating an acid attack on his ex-girlfriend in New Jersey. The crime, marked by its brutality and premeditation, has shocked communities across the nation and raised concerns about the alarming potential for violence in the wake of relationship breakdowns.

In the shocking and heinous crime that has left two communities reeling, a Florida man has been arrested for allegedly hiring two individuals to carry out a brutal acid attack on his ex-girlfriend in New Jersey. The incident, which occurred on July 26, 2024, has raised serious concerns about domestic violence and the lengths to which some individuals will go to inflict harm on others.

    The Perpetrators and the Attack
William DiBernardino, a 49-year-old resident of Boynton Beach, Florida, is accused of orchestrating the attack. According to prosecutors, DiBernardino hired Betty Jo Lane, 38, and Jmarr McNeil, 39, both from Jacksonville, Florida, to carry out the assault. The Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office in New Jersey revealed that the attack took place in Monroe Township, a quiet suburban community in southern New Jersey.

On the evening of July 26, the 42-year-old victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, returned home from work and parked in her driveway. As she opened her car door, she was ambushed by Lane, who threw a cup containing highly caustic acid directly at her. The victim sustained severe chemical burns over 35% of her body and was immediately airlifted to a specialized burn center, where she continues to receive treatment.

    The Investigation and Arrests
The investigation into the attack was swift and involved multiple law enforcement agencies. Members of the Monroe Police Department and the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office traveled to Florida, where they were assisted by the Boynton Beach Police Department, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, Fort Pierce Police Department, and the U.S. Marshals Service.

DiBernardino, Lane, and McNeil were all arrested in Florida. They have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, stalking, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. All three suspects waived extradition and are currently being held in Florida until they can be transported to New Jersey to face the charges.

    Motive and Background
Authorities believe that DiBernardino's motive for the attack stemmed from his dissatisfaction with the way his relationship with the victim ended. Acting Chief of Detectives Tom Gilbert stated, "We're very confident he enlisted these people to carry out his wishes, and clearly they did, and that's why all three of them are charged."

The relationship between DiBernardino and the victim had ended within the past year, and it is suspected that DiBernardino harbored deep resentment and anger towards her. The premeditated nature of the attack, involving the hiring of accomplices and the use of a rented vehicle, underscores the calculated and malicious intent behind the crime.

    Community Response and Legal Proceedings
The community in Monroe Township and beyond has been left in shock by the brutality of the attack. Domestic violence advocates have called for increased awareness and support for victims of such crimes. The case has also highlighted the need for stringent measures to prevent individuals with violent tendencies from carrying out such acts of retribution.

As the legal proceedings move forward, the focus will be on ensuring that justice is served for the victim. The charges against DiBernardino, Lane, and McNeil carry severe penalties, and if convicted, they could face lengthy prison sentences.

    Moving Forward
The crime has ignited a broader conversation about domestic violence and the urgent need for preventive measures. Advocates stress the importance of early intervention and support for victims of abusive relationships, emphasizing that leaving an abusive partner can be a particularly dangerous time.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of vigilance and support for victims. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies in apprehending the suspects demonstrate the commitment to bringing those responsible to justice. As the victim continues her recovery, the community stands in solidarity, hoping for her swift and complete healing.
