Carbondale Report: Board of Adjustments reactivated, pool naming rights reconsidered, Town Center reworked
All trustees were present at the regular meeting on July 23 with the exception of Ross Kribbs. The consent agenda was unanimously approved and included a sales tax report (24.8% increase compared to year-to-date 2023), a special event liquor license for Roaring Fork Youth Orchestra’s Bach to Bluegrass fundraiser on Aug. 23, a liquor license renewal for the Painted Pig, appointment of Sarah Jane Johnson and reappointment of Quinn Donnelly and Jane Hendricks to the Environmental Board and accounts payable.
Commercial inventory remains scarce in Carbondale
Following our annual tradition of pounding pavement and counting the number of commercial spaces in Carbondale, noting which are vacant, The Sopris Sun found 93% of the inventory is currently occupied in 2024. This is the third highest percentage since we began the count in 2017, trailing just behind last year. The slightly higher record came in 2019 before COVID disrupted business as usual.
Downtown Basalt development will be sold, not rented
Sixty-five dwelling units planned for downtown Basalt will be sold as condominiums instead of rented. Basalt Town Council approved a request from the old Clark’s Market building developers Andrew Light and Tim Belinski to convert the residential units in the mixed-use building from rentals to ownership. Mayor Pro Tem Ryan Slack cast the only dissenting vote.
Trustees explore options for Town Center
The Carbondale Board of Trustees met on Tuesday the 23rd to discuss the Carbondale Aquatics Center and the development of the Town Center project . On Tuesday evening, the Carbondale Board of Trustees voted on a motion to rename the John M. Fleet Pool to the Carbondale Aquatics Center. The motion included a contingency that a major donor may receive naming rights in the future. The motion passed four to two.

Garfield County Library schedules for July 29 – Aug. 4
A few exciting events are going on this week at the Garfield County Library Branches; learn to play the violin in Parachute or go to the Last Monday Book Club in Glenwood Springs on Monday. The Dungeons & Dragons Summer Camp in Parachute and Tai Chi in Glenwood Springs are on Wednesday and the Aspen Music Festival and School Guitar Ensemble will be in Carbondale on Thursday evening. On Saturday morning, all the branches are hosting the Hiking Club.
