An El Paso truck driver has been identified as one of two truckers killed in a fiery head-on collision after one of them hit an elk on Interstate 25 in New Mexico, state police said.

Adrian Alejandro Cruz, who is survived by a wife and two young children, was "a loving, unselfish, dedicated man," a woman identifying herself as his wife wrote on a GoFundMe account seeking help with funeral and related expenses.

New Mexico State Police arrived to find two semitrucks engulfed in flames after responding to a crash about 10:50 p.m. on Thursday, July 18, on I-25 near Caballo Lake, south of Truth or Consequences. Both drivers died at the scene.

A state police investigation found that one semitruck was northbound on I-25 when the truck hit an elk in the middle of the roadway, officials said.

The truck then swerved left, broke through the median barrier and went into the southbound lanes, colliding head-on with a truck driven by Cruz, who his wife stated was driving home toward El Paso. Both vehicles caught fire on impact, state police reported.

The identity of the driver in the northbound truck is pending.
