    Elk River Police Report: Burglars in former Elk River movie theater caught, arrested by police

    An 18-year-old Nowthen man and a 19-year-old Elk River man were arrested for burglary of the former Elk River movie theater at 570 Freeport Ave. on March 11.

    Elk River Police were called shortly after 9 p.m. by the owner of the business to a report of a burglary in progress. The owner said there were two people seen on camera and they were still in the business.

    Officers arrived and observed two males in the building. The males fled from the building and were apprehended a short distance from the business. Both males were taken into custody and transported to Sherburne County Jail.

    Elk River man arrested for DWI during Toward Zero Deaths detail

    A 66-year-old Elk River man was arrested for DWI by an Elk River Police officer in Big Lake during a Toward Zero Deaths traffic enforcement shortly before midnight on the night of Friday, March 8.

    The Elk River officer observed a vehicle traveling at what visually appeared to be a high rate of speed northbound on County Road 81 and activated radar, which showed the suspect vehicle traveling 67 mph in a posted 55 mph zone. After pulling the driver over on the county road in the vicinity of 217th Avenue, the officer detected signs of impairment from the driver and conducted field sobriety tests. Driver was placed under arrest for DWI and his vehicle was towed.

    Couple reports their adult son missing

    An Elk River couple in their 70s reported their 48-year-old son missing on the afternoon of Friday, March 8.

    Their adult son hasn’t been seen since the beginning of March and has their vehicle with permission. The missing man is known to frequent the Coon Rapids and Blaine areas. They would like to have his welfare checked, if located, and hopefully have him return home or at least contact his parents. A KOPS Alert was put out on the missing male and the vehicle he is driving.

    Victim reports ring bought for $10,400 in Mexico is cracked

    A 60-year-old Elk River man reported on March 6 that while in Costa Maya, Mexico, last month he had purchased a gold and diamond ring for $10,400 from Diamonds International. When he returned home and went to have the ring appraised, he was advised that the main diamond in the ring was cracked all the way through and now wished to file a police report. Police advised him that he would have to file the report with law enforcement in Costa Maya, Mexico, or look at pursuing a civil suit against the company.

    Lincoln student, 9, damages school

    Elk River Police took a damage to property report at Lincoln Elementary School after being called there at 11:35 a.m. on March 6.

    Staff reported that a student, a 9-year-old Elk River boy, had damaged items in the resource room while he was having a physical outburst. Upon arrival, the juvenile had been calmed by staff. Officer stood by while staff continued to speak with student and took photos of damage to wall and table.

    No one were injured. Staff advised the responding officer they were comfortable with the situation and would call if there were any further issues.

    Police educate mother who left child in car alone in handicap stall

    Elk River Police responded at 1 p.m. March 7 to a welfare check at Nature’s Dry Cleaners at 927 Highway 10 after a 56-year-old Big Lake man observed a young child in a car left unattended for more than five minutes.

    The car was parked outside the business in a handicap parking stall.

    Police spoke to a 46-year-old Elk River woman who was the vehicle owner and parent of the 5-year-old child. While en route, the child came out of the vehicle and went inside.

    The complainant also mentioned that the car did not have a handicap placard to be in that parking spot. The car was located and it was confirmed that there was no placard. An officer made contact with the owner of the car in the business who was with the small child. The officer advised the mentioned party about the complaint and advised her that her daughter could not be left in the vehicle alone at her age. She was also advised of the parking complaint.

    She stated that there was a placard in the car for her aunt who was not with her. The officer explained to her that she could not use the handicap parking placard if the handicapped party was not in the car with her.

    Worrying about their safety, man flags down cop about mini-bikes without lights

    A 27-year-old Elk River man flagged down an Elk River officer at about 10:30 p.m. on March 12 to report two males were riding mini-bikes in his neighborhood located in the 18000 block of Albany Street at night without lights. He told the officer he was worried they may be struck by vehicles not seeing them while they were riding.

    The officer went to the residence and spoke with two males about the issue. They stated they will find another place to ride from now on.

    Police use drone in unsuccessful suspect search in Big Lake

    The Elk River Police were called to assist the Big Lake Police Department in a search for a person who fled on foot following a traffic stop shortly before 10 p.m. on March 12 in the vicinity of Eagle Lake Road and Minnesota Avenue.

    The suspect had fled in a motor vehicle and provided false information before fleeing on foot. Officers flew the Elk River Police Department’s drone in attempt to locate the suspect. Officers were unsuccessful in finding the suspect with the drone.

    After school hit-and-run crash reported

    Elk River Police are looking into a hit-and-run reported the afternoon of March 12 in the 19200 block of Vernon Street near the entrance to Monarch Montessori School.

    A 41-year-old Elk River man reported that the driver of the vehicle that was struck was his 36-year-old wife who had been on her way to pick up their child from Meadowvale School. She was traveling eastbound on Vernon Street in the 19200 block going past the driveway to the Monarch Montessori School at 19277 Vernon St. into Meadowvale School parking lot when a vehicle was exiting northbound from the Montessori school and hit the passenger side of her vehicle and left the scene.

    The vehicle was described as possibly a Jeep Cherokee. The vehicle was not located.

    Death of 35-year-old Elk River man under investigation

    The Elk River Police Department, the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office and the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the death of a 35-year-old Elk River man.

    Elk River Police responded to a report at 1:52 p.m. March 11 of a man found deceased on the deck at a residence in the 1800 block of Meadowvale Road.
