Updated: Search for missing person on Mississippi River taking place

At 11:43 a.m. today, Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office was notified of several people struggling in the water at Rivers Edge Commons in Elk River. One adult male and two juveniles had been swimming on a sandbar in the river.The two children began to struggle in the current. The adult male grabbed onto one of the juveniles and was able to get her to the sandbar. The adult male then jumped in to assist the other juvenile. The adult male was able to support the second juvenile in the water for a short time and push that child to shore before the adult disappeared under the water. Elk River firefighters and police were able to retrieve the child from the water.
