    NWS confirms tornado in Indiana near Michigan border

    GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The National Weather Service has confirmed that the storm system that swept across southern Michigan Monday night produced a tornado in northern Indiana.

    A preliminary report issued Tuesday afternoon confirmed that a tornado touched down on the south side of Elkhart, about 5 miles south of the state line. The top winds were measured around 85 miles per hour, which grades out to be a high-end EF0.

    News 8 affiliate WNDU-TV out of South Bend reports that Elkhart County Emergency Management is working to declare an emergency for the county to activate more resources.

    WNDU reports that approximately 60 homes were damaged by the storms and at least six were destroyed. The Salvation Army and the American Red Cross are working to help people who have been displaced.

    The storm, which brought a risk of severe weather, didn’t turn up as much damage in Michigan, but did drop between 2 to 4 inches of rain in certain parts of the state, causing some flooding . Several roads in Kalamazoo were shut down by flood waters.

    More details about the storm are expected to be released once the survey team completes its assessment.
