The Lady Elks Varsity softball team traveled to South Stokes on Tuesday to take on the Sauras of South Stokes in a conference match-up. This was the first game for the Lady Elks in nearly two weeks after the team took off some time for Elkin’s senior trip and for the Easter holiday. The Elks lost to the Sauras, 3-1, despite outhitting South Stokes 11-3.

Elkin’s pitching was strong, with senior Lily Robbins striking out four and relief pitcher and senior, Karly Gentry striking out two. The South Stokes pitcher only sat down one Elkin batter. Robbins pitched for four innings, allowing three runs with only two walks. Gentry pitched for two innings, with no hits allowed and only one walk.

Elkin got on the scoreboard in the second inning after Robbins singled, bringing home her teammate Gentry. But South Stokes took the lead 2-1, in the bottom of the fourth inning, thanks to a one-two punch, two double hits from the Sauras’ Alana Knight and Ryleigh Pinnix. The Elks were unable to make their way around the bases to score again and left 11 runners on base for the game.

Collectively, Elkin accumulated 11 hits for the game. Robbins went 3-for-4 at the plate and batted in the Elks’ lone run. Maggie Tomlin, Macy Lane and Alyssa Jenkins each had multiple hits. The Elks were sure-handed and did not commit a single error. Senior catcher Leah White made seven total plays, the most for Elkin.

The Lady Elks’ conference record fell to 3-2, and 7-4 overall. Conference play will continue as they will face off with North Stokes on Friday when they host the Vikings at Crater Park. Game time will be 6 p.m.
