Elkin Big Band to perform 'Jazz Giants'

ELKIN — The Elkin Big Band is slated to perform at 7 p.m. Thursday at The Reeves Theater, located 129 W. Main St. The show “Jazz Giants” will feature famous big band jazz hits of the past 50 years.

Special guest performer Dr. Jack Stamp, a well-known composer of American concert band music, will be flying in from Minneapolis, MN to perform with the Elkin Big Band.

“Having Jack perform with the EBB is really an exciting event,” said band manager Michael Beres. “We will be performing a world premier of an original chart written by Dr. Stamp for the EBB.”

Beres explained that Stamp was his high school band director in the late 1970s.

“We have remained in touch since then and I am honored that he would take the time out of his busy schedule to perform with us. The fact that he composed a piece for us as well is just icing on the cake,” said Beres.

Stamp will also be conducting a special program at Elkin High School’s Dixon Auditorium on Wednesday May 29 from 6 to 9 p.m. with the Yadkin Valley Community Band in two of his original compositions.

Ticket proceeds from all Elkin Big Band concerts go to benefit the Reeves Downtown School of Music.
