    40 residents displaced after fire breaks out at Howard County apartment complex

    HOWARD COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — Officials in Howard County said 40 residents were displaced after a fire broke out at an apartment complex in Elkridge on Saturday morning.

    On July 27, around 5 a.m., the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services was called to the 6300 block of Orchard Club Drive for a fire. Once on the scene, first responders found flames coming from multiple floors of an apartment building.

    The fire department said crews immediately began helping residents while additional first responders searched the building.

    Officials said several firefighters from Anne Arundel and Baltimore Counties were called to assist and the fire was brought under control in about an hour.

    One firefighter was taken to the hospital with a minor injury. The fire department said responders evaluated one person at the scene and took another person to the hospital for further evaluation.

    As a result of the fire, 14 apartments were considered “inhabitable” and the American Red Cross was assisting families.

    As of Monday morning, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
