When you think of the top 10 restaurants in the country, you may picture polished and glamorous settings, exotic flavor pairings, and loads of extruded foam. But one local restaurant may force you to reconsider that notion.

Every year, Yelp releases the top 100 restaurants in the country as rated by its reviewers. This year, the number 8 spot is held by a casual Tucson eatery featuring bright, mouth-watering Latin-inspired vegan food.

    What restaurant is it?

That restaurant is called Tumerico, and its menu changes so frequently that it's not even featured on the website. However, the tacos are always plentiful, as are other Latin favorites like chilaquiles, burritos, and tostadas. The food is always fresh, local, and brightly colored.

The restaurant is the brainchild of Chef Wendy, who says that "It's all about food, serving the community by healing through food. The food at our restaurant feels like home, it's like family."

The restaurant features both a vegetarian menu with eggs and cheese and a fully plant-based vegan menu.

Why should I eat at Tumerico?

Those who are skeptical of vegetarian and vegan food feel it can lack flavor. But Tumerico patrons beg to differ:

I think if I had to, I could easily live on the tacos, rice, and beans I had in this meal, with really good salsa and some guacamole.
Vegan Mexican food can be a bummer sometimes, either creepy cheese or just too "healthy" tasting. Tumerico has mastered the art of healthy, plant-based, and absolutely mouthwatering.
Easily one of the best meals I've had since I moved to Tucson. I got the Frida Khalo tostadas, which came with guacamole, sautéed mushrooms, and zucchini, huitlacoche, cheese (optional), topped with cashew cream, and served with pico de gallo and beans & rice on the side.

The food is plentiful too, with many patrons saying they had some to take home after their delicious meal.

Sometimes the best food doesn't come with a huge price tag and a reservation weeks in the making. It comes from a humble place where they make meals with love, know-how, and a whole lot of fresh ingredients.
