Andover Central High School teacher and softball coach dies after battling cancer
ANDOVER, Kan. (KAKE) - The Andover Central High School is mourning the loss of art teacher and softball coach Rita Frakes who passed away on Friday after battling cancer. Andover Central High School remembers Ms. Frakes as, "an amazing art teacher, mentor and friend to students and colleagues alike. Her larger-than-life personality and steadfast positive energy stayed with her, despite the challenges she was facing. She will be dearly missed in our school and Jaguar community."
Wichita hospitals report fireworks injuries
Ascension Via Christi and Wesley Healthcare have issued numbers on the fireworks injuries that were reported in Wichita during the July 4th fireworks season. Via Christi hospitals reported a total of 35 patients, with seven admitted to the burn unit, ten that were treated for minor injuries, and 18 in outpatient care.

Following an overnight storm, there was bright sunshine and mild temperatures for Independence Day festivities in Salina. Independence Day began with a patriotic set of songs from the Salina Municipal Band, and it ended with a spectacular fireworks display. ‘He would do anything for Emporia:’ City of Emporia mourning the passing of Emporia businessman, commissioner, mayor and ‘steward’ Danny Giefer
For 11 years local business owner Danny Giefer gave his knowledge and time to help better the city of Emporia as a member of the Emporia City Commission. Saturday, the City of Emporia extended its praise and love for Giefer and his commitment to Emporia and expressed its deepest sympathies to the Giefer family upon learning his passing earlier in the day. Giefer had been battling Leiomyosarcoma for the past year following a diagnosis in early 2023.

Vanessa Poyner, 46, is the new Fort Scott Community College Dean of Students as of June 11. Her office is located in the Student Services office of Bailey Hall. Poyner earned her Associate of Science from Fort Scott Community College, then a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from Missouri Southern State University and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from the University of Cincinnati.
