Elmira police said a 16-year-old boy was hospitalized Monday after falling off the roof of a motor vehicle as it sped along Walnut Street overnight.

Police said they responded to the 300 block of Walnut at about 1:24 a.m. after receiving reports of a motor vehicle crash and a "pedestrian with injuries."

According to police, witnesses told authorities that the youth was standing on the roof of the car as the vehicle traveled at a high rate of speed down Walnut before he fell off and struck the pavement.

After police rendered aid at the scene, the youth was taken by an Erway ambulance to Robert Packer Hospital, where he is in stable condition, officials said. The minor's name was not released.

Police said the driver of the vehicle was identified and is cooperating with the investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the event or has video or other information is asked to contact the Elmira Police Department at 607-737-5626.
