State Historic Preservation Office Awards Historic Preservation Grants to Seven Michigan Communities
LANSING, Mich. – The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) has awarded $250,000 in grants to seven Michigan communities, the Michigan Strategic Fund announced today. The grants represent awards from the federal Historic Preservation Fund (HPF)-Certified Local Government (CLG) program administered by SHPO and will benefit local preservation and community planning goals in Charlevoix, Coldwater, Detroit, Flat Rock, Holland, Livonia, and Washtenaw County.

Cheboygan Major Boys All Stars eliminated by Harbor Springs in district tournament
CHEBOYGAN – The Cheboygan Major Boys (10-12) all-star baseball team put itself in a decent position to make the championship game. Alpenfest runs all week in Gaylord with fun for all
GAYLORD — Alpenfest 59 started on Tuesday, but there’s still time to catch the fun. The festival draws many people from across the state, and it’s easy to see why with all the activities, which include a stone-throwing competition, line dancing class and the famous ice cream social. Organizers say it’s a great time for the community to come together on Main Street. “We’re bringing Northern Michigan together here in downtown Gaylord for one whole week, and our crowds have been increasing year after year since COVID. So we’re really happy about that. We’ve got a lot of positive comments. We’re always adding something new, and it’s friends meeting friends that haven’t seen one another in years,” said festival chairman Kenneth Mattei.
Boaters motor in for Thursday’s Boyne Thunder powerboat poker run
BOYNE CITY — This weekend, boaters will get to enjoy Lake Charlevoix at high speed. Boyne Thunder is a thrilling powerboat poker run hosted by Boyne City Main Street. Boaters will make their away to five different stops around the lake to collect cards. At the end, everyone will open the cards to reveal who has the best hand. The money raised from the event helps to promote downtown as well as Camp Quality, which helps children battling cancer, and Challenge Mountain, which assists people with disabilities.
Lavender in bloom
BOYNE CITY — The lavender is officially in peak bloom at Lavender Hill Farm near Boyne City. The farm, located at 7354 Horton Bay Road, hosts concerts, craft workshops, yoga classes and more during the summer months. U-Cut is also available from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily while supply lasts.

Camp Grayling hosts their first ever Boots on the Ground Heroes Memorial
CRAWFORD COUNTY -- The first ever Boots on the Ground Heroes Memorial takes place Saturday at Camp Grayling. Combat boots adorned with flags and placards will memorialize fallen military members. Each boot will represent a service member from any branch who has passed away while in service. The ceremony will also include a blessing from the chaplain, comments from Camp Grayling commander Colonel Scott Meyers and the playing of Taps. Then the display will be opened. “As [a] currently serving member, it always makes me feel better about my service, knowing if something did tragically happen that I will be remembered in multiple different ways. But this event also honors the survivors of those service members, and it’s an opportunity for them to get the recognition of their sacrifice,” said Captain Adam Stephens, Michigan National Guard.
