LAS VEGAS -- With picks No. 115, 147, and 179, the New York Islanders selected Dmitry Gamzin, Marcus Gidlöf, and Xavier Veilleux, respectively.
Here are previews of each new Islanders prospect:
Dmitry Gamzin, G, No. 115
Gamzin put up a 1.98 GAA and .937 SV% in 13 games with CSKA Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), as well as a 2.42 GAA and .922 SV% in 23 games with Zvezda Moscow of the All-Russian Hockey League (VHL). The left-catch goaltender stands at 6’ 3” and 174 pounds.
Gamzin was largely unranked by scouting organizations despite his exceptional numbers.
At 21 years old, Gamzin is an overage prospect for the Islanders in the draft. Islanders management has already shown a willingness to draft older prospects—2022 5th-round pick Matthew Maggio was 19 years old when selected.
The Russian plays for the same KHL team that Islanders star goaltender Ilya Sorokin played for (CSKA Moscow). Gamzin will continue to play for CSKA Moscow this next season.
Marcus Gidlöf, G, No. 147
Gidlöf put up a 2.22 GAA and .923 SV% in 26 games with Leksands IF J20 of the J20 Nationell League. In five playoff games with Leksands IF J20, Gidlöf had a 3.14 GAA and a .895 SV%.
The left-catch Swede has a staggering 6’ 6” and 212-pound frame at 18 years old.
According to EliteProspects , Gidlöf’s “post-integration details are strong,” along with his reactivity and transition ability. For his size, Gidlöf is very mobile in the crease.
Gidlöf was ranked in the mid-to-late rounds by most scouting organizations.
The goaltender’s stature is similar to that of Islanders’ 2020 7th-round pick Henrik Tikkanen, who stands at 6’ 7” and 201 pounds.
Gidlöf is slated to play with Leksands IF J20 again this coming fall, with a potential stint at the World Juniors with Sweden.
Xavier Veilleux, D, No. 179
Veilleux scored three goals with 29 assists for 32 points in 63 games with the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League (USHL). In seven playoff games with the Lumberjacks, Veilleux put up five points (one goal, four assists).
Veilleux plays well in all three zones and “seeks to add value to every sequence,” according to EliteProspects . The blueliner transports the puck well and rarely makes mistakes due to his on-ice awareness and intelligence.
Veilleux was generally ranked higher than where the Islanders selected him—many scouts pegged the defenseman as a mid-round pick.
He will play for Muskegon next season before heading to Harvard University for NCAA hockey in 2025-26.
Veilleux was the only prospect on Day 2 that was in attendance. More on him coming later.
