Neil Smith became the general manager of the New York Islanders on June 8, 2006.

By July 19, 2006, Smith was out after disagreements with the late team owner Charles Wang on how the team should be run.

In those 40 days at the helm, Smith got a lot done, drafting Kyle Okposo with the seventh overall pick in the draft.

He brought in players like Tom Poti, Brendan Witt, and the late Chris Simon, building a team that made the playoffs -- by the skin of their teeth.

From what went wrong on Long Island to his thoughts about the NHL, Free Agency, the Islanders' moves thus far, and more, Smith joined Hockey Night in New York to tell it all:

For more Neil Smith, check out his weekly podcast, " The NHL Wraparound ".

During the Islanders' season, catch Hockey Night in New York on Sunday nights at 8 PM ET live at twitch.tv/hockeynightny or by going to the show's Youtube, Twitter and Facebook pages.
