Very rarely does anything leak out, whether that's involving trade discussions or free agent contracts.
It's a trait that Islanders fans complain about constantly, feeling as if Lamoriello keeps things from his loyal customers for fun.
If we at The Hockey News do get any sourced information regarding the Islanders, we can assure you it doesn't come from the mouth of Lamoriello or any of his employees.
But there's a reason why Lamoriello operates the way he does.
Anytime something leaks out, it has the chance to blow up in his face, and in an already tricky business, why make his life harder than it already is?
Exhibit A of why it pays to keep secrets is what's going on between the New York Rangers and their captain, Jacob Trouba.
The 30-year-old defenseman, who struggled during the season and in vital moments during the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, is owed $8 million each of the next two seasons.
The New York Post's Larry Brooks reported that the Rangers were, unbeknownst to him, looking to move Trouba to the Detroit Red Wings.
Trouba, being from Michigan, was likely to accept, with the Rangers retaining salary.
But, when the Rangers asked Trouba for his 15-team no-trade list--his contract went from a no-trade clause to a modified no-trade clause on July 1--Detroit was on it.
For those who don't know the full story, Trouba doesn't want to leave New York.
His wife, Kelly, is finishing up her three-year residency at a New York hospital. The timeline for her to finish lined up purposefully with Trouba's five-year no-movement clause.
However, her residency was delayed a year, and now Trouba doesn't have full protection.
So, now the Rangers are in a sticky situation with their captain.

Not only have they missed out on signing any top-flight free agents after falling in six games to the Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers in the Eastern Conference Finals, but if they can't find a team to move Trouba to, the fan base is not going to be too kind when he takes the ice this fall.
Had the reports never come out about Trouba going to Detroit—no one should be knocking any reporter for doing their job, as this falls on general manager Chris Drury or whoever leaked the information—he likely wouldn't have included them on his no-trade list.
To be fair to Drury, a member of the Red Wings organization may have also leaked the information, but regardless, Drury has a role to play in this.
Would Trouba have been happy that the Rangers more or less went against his wishes without talking to him first?
Sure, but this is a business, and the Rangers would have done what they had to.
It's a horrible situation for the franchise, their captain, and the fan base, but one that could have been avoided.
So, Islanders fans should look at this situation and value that Lamoriello values being secretive because you never know when this "negative" character trait will save the team.
