‘We can’t ignore the reality’: Northern Minnesota community works together to prepare for wildfire
Ely is a small town with a big wildfire problem. Situated entirely within Superior National Forest, the biggest national forest east of the Mississippi sits atop a 3-million-acre tinderbox. Climate change, a century of fire suppression, and the effects of a native tree insect have converged to make the town of Ely a bullseye in a forest ripe for fire.
Veterans Experience Boundary Waters Getaway
SUPERIOR Wi. — Veterans are taking a nature trip to celebrate serving our country. A handful of veterans are heading out on a weeklong getaway to the Boundary Waters in Ely. The participants will do activities such as fishing, canoeing, and playing cards. This free annual trip has been going on for eight years now, and each time, the participants take something away from it. It’s a great opportunity for storytelling, and a time for bonding with each other.

Relationships between family members and longtime friends have been damaged by political differences. People on both sides fling out labels of “idiots,” “scumbags,” and “liars” for those with whom they disagree. This is not the way to find solutions to the challenges facing the Ely area and America.
