The diver who drowned in Crane Lake on Sunday has been identified as 50-year-old William Rebarich of Embarrass, Minnesota.

Rebarich was part of a group volunteering to recover sunken equipment in a 70-foot-deep section of the lake, which is part of Voyageurs National Park.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says that Rebarich, who was trained as a scuba diver, did not resurface when diving for the machinery.

First responders were called and retrieved him from under the water, bringing him to shore. Despite their life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The drowning is still under investigation by the sheriff's office.
