Iowa DNR issues additional fines for chicken confinement fires near Villisca
(Des Moines) -- More penalties have been assessed in connection with a large chicken confinement fire in Villisca last year. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources recently issued consent orders, with Shawn Gohlinghorst and Darrel Schipansky of Montgomery County each agreeing to pay $10,000 administrative penalties. The orders stem from chicken confinement fires at the former Montgomery Valley Farms property in June last year. According to the orders, Schipansky owned the property, while Gohlinghorst and Tyson Means were contracting out the facility. Means agreed to a similar $10,000 fine last month. According to the order, on June 29th, the DNR's field office in Atlantic received a complaint that the buildings on the property were being burned and that there was a large amount of black smoke in the area. Kristi Burg is an environmental specialist with the Iowa DNR and was one of the individuals who handled the initial investigation. In a recent interview with KMA News, Burg said that after an investigation was initiated the following day, it was found all 10 buildings on the property had been burned down, with the order alleging several requirements were not met before the fire.
