An archway festooned with multicolored balloons swayed slightly at the corner of Valdez and 23rd Streets on a Saturday morning in June, the gateway to the Valdez Street Vibes Festival. A soft breeze pushed waves of papel picado streamers over a gold catwalk in anticipation of the day’s main attraction – Creative Growth Art Center’s “50th Birthday Bash” and, especially, its 11th “Beyond Trend Fashion Runway Show.” With its exuberant, eye-popping procession of “wearable art” garments modeled by its creators, the first “Beyond Trend” captured the fashion art world’s immediate attention and pushed the boundary of what the art and culture of disability offers its viewers.

The Sea Wolf had our monthly Hi’s Tackle Box charter today and we finally had a good weather trip. The gang fished depths from 15 feet to 80 feet of water for some pretty good action on black, vermilion, gopher and brown rockfish and a steady pick of lingcod. Our day ended early with 190 rockfish and 38 lingcod for a group of 19.

CHP rescues kitten stranded on the side of I-80 in Oakland
A kitten stranded on the side of the highway Friday night was rescued after a call to the California Highway Patrol. Around 8 p.m., the CHP said they got a call about a kitten being stranded on the side of Interstate 80, near the I-580 eastbound transition. CHP officer Bretz responded to the call and found the kitten scared and shaking near the highway. "Officer Bretz quickly and calmly rescued this adorable fur-ball from getting hit," the CHP said. "We're thankful to those that called this in and grateful for officer Bretz's quick action and kind heart."

Members of an Oakland church showed a commitment to service just days after being burglarized twice in 48 hours.Volunteers showed up for a grocery giveaway Saturday at the East Bay Church of Religious Science.Last Saturday and Sunday thieves broke into the church. Horse dies on racetrack at Alameda County Fair after collision
A 4-year-old horse died after it raced Sunday at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds Racetrack, according to an animal rights group. The Kill Racing Not Horses organization said that the California Authority of Racing Fairs confirmed that a racehorse, a gelding named Toppers Wager, died on the track "without euthanization" after a collision with another horse. Water main break near San Pablo damages homes
A water main break near San Pablo Sunday night left several homes damaged by the torrent of water flowing through a neighborhood.The break happened just before 10 p.m. in the unincorporated community of Tara Hills with the water buckling roads and dislodging fences in the area of Kevin Road and Tara Hills Drive.At least five homes suffered extensive damage from the water flow.Crews from the East Bay Municipal Utilities District and Contra Costa County Fire Protection District were on the scene in addition to the California Highway Patrol.There was no immediate word on what caused the water main break.
