'They leave me with nothing': Former ESU student concerned with Emporia healthcare amid 12-year legal battle with providers
For 12 years, Emeline Fuller, a local artist and 2021 Emporia State graduate, has endured a legal battle for her life. The catalyst? A 2012 lymph node biopsy and cat scratch disease diagnosis resulting in a medical bill she simply couldn’t afford. Since May of that year, she has been sued 10 times by Emporia health care providers and has had wage garnishments released and reordered for bills she says she “just can’t pay,”.

Emporia City Commissioners pause decision on revenue-neutral rate until mid-month following study session Wednesday
Emporia City Commissioners will take a short pause to allow for information gathering before setting the city’s revenue-neutral rate for the 2025 fiscal year. During their regular study session on Tuesday, commissioners reviewed options for setting the RNR not to exceed limit with four options presented by City Treasurer Janet Harouff. Of the four options, commissioners mainly focused on options two and three.
City Commission action and study meetings coming Tuesday
Emporia City Commissioners are convening a day earlier than normal for their regular action and study meetings this week. Commissioners will convene Tuesday at 11 am for their regular action meeting inside of the Municipal Courtroom at White Auditorium. Only three items are on the agenda including a resolution to establish a public hearing to possibly declare the Gazette Building Development as a Reinvestment Housing Incentive District (RHID) in downtown Emporia.

Turnpike Authority CEO: Cashless tolling launches smoothly
A day 10 years in the making has finally arrived for the Kansas Turnpike Authority. Cashless tolling officially began early Monday, and Chief Executive Officer Steve Hewitt says the start was smooth. On KVOE’s Talk of Emporia on Monday — just a few hours after the official launch — Hewitt said things are working as Turnpike administrators expected.
