Erie SeaWolves manager Gabe Alvarez has been around the next generation of baseball stars his entire career.

From a decade of coaching at USC to managing the SeaWolves for the past three years, Alvarez enjoys being around the younger players and helping them get better every day.

In less than two weeks, Alvarez will be around the best minor league players in all of baseball as he has been selected to coach in the MLB Futures Game at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas on July 13.

“It's a great honor and I'm very excited about it,” Alvarez said. “I can't wait to be there.”

In an interesting twist, Alvarez will be the third base coach for the National League squad despite being a part of an American League organization. The change came when his high school friend and former major leaguer Michael Young was named the manager of the National League team. The two attended Bishop Amat High School in Los Angeles.

“Michael Young and I went to high school together, so he traded for me to get me on his staff,” Alvarez said. “I can't wait to be in the dugout with him.”

Alvarez will miss three home games for the SeaWolves from July 12-14 and bench coach Matt Malott will take over as the Erie manager.

The Futures Game is part of the weekend festivities at the MLB All-Star game. It has included numerous former SeaWolves, including Colt Keith, Dillon Dingler, Wilmer Flores, Spencer Torkelson, Riley Greene, Matt Manning, Jake Rogers and Isaac Paredes in the past five to six years.

“I get to see the best of the young guys and the up-and-comers,” Alvarez said. “It's exciting to see the top guys from other organizations and the future big leaguers.”
