New Bern's Baxter Clock marks 104 years amid challenges
New Bern is celebrating a 104 birthday, and you may be surprised at who it is. The Baxter Clock is 104 years old, and time has not always been kind. According to the New Bern Historical Society in 1920 Dr. J. O. Baxter purchased the clock from the Seth Thomas Clock Company in Thomaston, Connecticut for his jewelry store. However, in May of 1977 a truck backed into the clock and bent the column. When the Baxter family tried to salvage the clock and straighten it the clock dropped shattering into many pieces. The clock remained with just a base for 14 years until the citizens of New Bern raised funds and with hard work and perseverance the clock has been ticking since its dedication ceremony on April 20, 1991.
