College Football Reporter Takes Serious Jab at Dan Lanning and Oregon's Recruiting Practices

The publisher of On3's University of Tennessee team site mentioned Oregon amid some critical NIL-related comments on Monday.

Brent Hubbs, the overseeing publisher of Volquest.com, exercised a cautious approach while discussing the modern recruiting landscape on 104.5 'The Zone' in Nashville.

"Here's the other thing too—we talk about NIL a lot, right? NIL, NIL, NIL," Hubbs said. "At some point, when the money's pretty even, it comes down to where you're most comfortable, so you got to go recruit them."

From there, Hubbs steered the conversation toward Oregon specifically, commenting on the Ducks' recent decommitments.

"I think Oregon is learning this, right?" Hubbs said. "Oregon just kind of had the thought process of, 'We'll just go buy us a class,' and they've lost three or four commits in the last two weeks because they don't really want to work and live in Eugene."

Class of 2025 tight end Da'Saahn Brame, a consensus four-star recruit, flipped his commitment from Oregon to Tennessee on July 28, while four-star defensive tackle Josiah Sharma, also a member of the class of 2025, ditched the Ducks and committed to Texas just three days prior.

These recent decommits likely fueled Hubbs' comments, which went on to include some scathing assumptions.

"I don't think the coaches have the relationships with those players that other schools have," Hubbs said. "I think they've just said, 'Well, we'll NIL it.' You can't just 'NIL it' because everybody's got NIL funds now, okay? I mean, at the Power Five level, everybody's got a plan for NIL, so at some point, it comes back to old-school recruiting and your relationships, and you've got to work at it."

Despite the recent decommitments of Brame and Sharma, Oregon's 2025 class ranks sixth in the nation according to 247Sports, including three five-star and 11 four-star commitments. Meanwhile, Tennessee is ranked seventh with 12 four-star and nine three-star commits.
