HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – The Vanderburgh County Coroners Office has identified the man killed in a shooting in the 500 block of Lewis Avenue as Kyle Puckett, 36.

Authorities say they were called to the same residence four times within the span of two days, including yesterday’s fatal shootout with officers. Officers say when they arrived, the man climbed out of his truck and immediately pointed a loaded gun at officers.

Body cam footage and drone video shows officers retreating and setting up a perimeter as the man positioned himself behind his house armed with a handgun and a rifle and at least one magazine of ammunition.

Police say the man appeared to have slurred speech and had difficulty keeping his balance. They also said he was not in a stable mental state.

Drone footage showed the man reaching for a gun, prompting officers to fire. Sgt. Trudy Day with Evansville Police say it does not appear the man was hit by the first rounds of fire. Later, video appears to show the man reaching again for the gun, causing officers to open fire.

Police say it was only in the last few days that the man’s state began to quickly decline. They could not speculate on his motives, but Sgt. Day says it was obvious from the beginning he had no intentions of cooperating with police.

Authorities say the man fired several rounds and then pointed the gun back at officers. Officers fired their weapons and hit the suspect.
