EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — Evansville Police continue investigating a deadly crash on Independence Day.

Officers responded to an SUV accident at the intersection of Fulton Avenue and Florida Street that killed a man and a woman around 8:30 on July 4.

Eyewitness News is told a driver was heading northbound on Fulton Avenue when it struck the two victims, aged between their 50s and 70s.

“When officeres arrived, they found two pedestrians on the roadway and weren’t even really able to find a pulse at that time,” Evansville Police Officer Taylor Merriss says. “They did try lifesaving measures, and unfortunately the people that were struck succumbed to their injuries on scene.”

Police believe the driver was obeying traffic laws and was not distracted. She was cooperative with officers as well.

“She did stick around. She was taken to the hospital to get a blood draw, which is normal protocol for somebody who’s driving in an accident and involved in an accident with serious bodily injury,” Officer Merriss says.

    No arrests have been made.

“We’ll wait and see what her bloodwork says — her toxicology,” Officer Merriss says. “I can’t say if we anticipate arrest or not. We also have our accident re-constructionist who went to the scene to really piece together how the accident occured.”

Also at this time in the investigation, police have not released the name of the driver.

Officer Merriss would like to remind drivers to stay vigilant — and mind the speed limit — while behind the wheel.

“Everybody wants their family to come home, and last night’s incident — two people aren’t going to be coming home, so just to be mindful of that this summer,” Officer Merriss says.

The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Officer is still working to identify the victims and to notify family members.

Officials tell us they believe we’ll know the identities within the next few days.
