With just 55 votes separating the two leading candidates in the June 18 Republican primary, the Aug. 27 runoff election could be a nail-biter.

Michael Colaw and Corey Shivel , who garnered 36% and 38% of the primary vote, respectively, are now set to face off in a winner-take-all election for County Commissioner District 2.

Historically, runoff elections have seen low voter turnout. There is no Democratic challenger in this race, meaning the winner on Tuesday will secure the position outright.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day, and Washington County Election Board Secretary Yvonne House urged voters, especially first-timers, to come prepared.

“Anyone who is in line by 7 p.m. on Tuesday and eligible to vote will be allowed to vote,” House said in a press release.

Voters are reminded to bring an approved form of identification and follow proper ballot marking procedures to ensure their vote is counted. Audio-assisted ballot systems are available for those needing assistance, and precinct officials are also ready to help voters who are physically disabled.

The Washington County Election Board office is located at 401 S. Johnstone Ave., Suite 4, and can be reached at 918-337-2850 for any questions.
