This time, along with the typical updates to gameplay and graphics, there's also a brand new roster complete with updated ratings for each player. Bronny James, who is still fresh out of college, has been assigned a 68 rating along with several other rookies.
Rookies are always a slippery slope when it comes to 2K, given that there's nothing to base their ratings on. But in this case, it seems like the company left the highest ratings to the top picks, such as Zaccharie Risacher Alexandre Sarr, who are both starting at 75.
Since Bronny, 19, was picked at 55, it makes sense that he's 68 overall and it's best to keep him on the same track as his peers. For some Lakers fans online, it's a fair number for Bronny given how he started but for others, it still isn't high enough.
Of course, Bronny has already commented on what his rating should be. Based on an earlier statement, he believes 80 is an appropriate score for himself, and some fans have expressed a similar sentiment.
As the son of LeBron James , Bronny was always going to have a massive spotlight on his head and he's handled it well enough so far. After averaging 4.8 points per game at USC, he declared for the draft and prepared to make the transition to the NBA.
After some maneuvering on draft day, he became a Laker and officially joined his dad to become the first active father-son duo in NBA history. After signing a 3-year, guaranteed deal with the Lakers, Bronny's place is secure and he'll have ample time to grow and develop his game.
In the Summer League, Bronny's shooting struggles continued with averages of 8.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.0 assists but he showed flashes of his potential offensively and gave the fans reason to be optimistic about his future. Austin Reaves even described his arrival as "special."
As good as Bronny has looked at times, LeBron was rated 78 as a rookie back in 2003, and it's possible that James Jr. may never reach that level as a veteran. But in his situation with the Lakers, he'll have all the tools he needs to maximize his talent and carve out a permanent place in the rotation.
With James, Bronny, Anthony Davis, Austin Reaves, and others, the Lakers hope to be somewhat competitive next season but only time will tell how long they can keep up with the best in the West.
As for Bronny, we can expect his development to be a slow one. We might not even see him in a game until after some time in the G-League, where he can play the rust off and get used to professional-level talent.
Either way, the pressure will be on for the kid to live up to his family name and validate the Lakers selecting him with their final pick this year. NBA 2K is giving him a fair and honest chance to make it in the NBA and he has all the confidence he needs to prove them right.
