City of Hope appoints Shady Eldaif, M.D. as Director of Thoracic Oncology
City of Hope® Cancer Center Atlanta (located in Newnan) announced Monday the appointment of Shady Eldaif, M.D., as their new director of Thoracic Oncology. In his role, Eldaif will be responsible for the coordination of their clinical team as well as the expansion and development of treatments, techniques and technology for thoracic cancer. He will also provide direct patient care as a thoracic surgeon.

Pedestrian Struck on Reinhardt College Parkway in Canton
A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Reinhardt College Parkway in Canton Monday, the the Canton Police Department reports. Officers were dispatched at 1:51 p.m. Monday to the crash, according to Canton PD. The pedestrian was transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, Officer Pacer Cordry told the Tribune in an email. The eastbound lanes of Reinhardt College Parkway in Canton were closed from Waleska Road to Reservoir Drive while authorities responded. The road was open again by 4:30 p.m.

In May 1951, William “W.R.” Saxon stepped aboard a Smoky Mountain Stages Inc. bus in Atlanta with his ticket grasped tightly in his hand. Bound for his home in the Southside neighborhood of Asheville, North Carolina, the Black insurance agent was no stranger to the pervasive Jim Crow discrimination of his time. But this seemingly routine ride turned into a pivotal moment when Saxon refused to move to the back of the segregated interstate bus—a full four years before Rosa Parks’ similar but far more famous act of civil disobedience. It’s unknown if Saxon’s case directly inspired later Black activists like Parks, but the lawsuit he subsequently filed against the bus company brought heightened media scrutiny and public awareness of civil rights issues in the South.
