Former Frostburg, UMD tackle drafted in UFL
ARLINGTON, Texas — Former Frostburg State and Maryland offensive tackle Gottlieb Ayedze was drafted by the DC Defenders in the United Football League draft on Wednesday. The United Football League (UFL) is a developmental football league that was a merger between the XFL and United States Football League. Ayedze was drafted fourth overall by the Defenders, but is not expected to immediately join them. He signed as a undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles after this year's NFL Draft and is still on the Eagles roster. GRMC welcomes Aster Berhane, MD, to Garrett Medical Group in LaVale
LAVALE — Garrett Regional Medical Center (GRMC) welcomes Aster Berhane, MD, to WVU Medicine Garrett Medical Group in LaVale. Dr. Berhane received her medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI. She spent two years in an internal medicine residency program at Wayne, in the Detroit Medical Center. She obtained her undergraduate degree at Andrews University/Adventist University of East Africa, Kenya (affiliate university) in Berrien Springs, Mich.
Gerald “Gerry” Bowman
Gerald “Gerry” Bowman entered Heaven and into the arms of his Savior on Thursday, July 18, 2024. He was 80. He was born on September 13, 1943 to parents Walter and Ura (Means) Bowman in Everett, Pennsylvania. Gerry was a graduate of Everett High School, where he competed as a very talented three-sport athlete.
Thayer, first Garrett College Board chair, dies
GRANTSVILLE — Diane Thayer, the first chair of the Garrett Community College Board of Trustees, passed away Saturday at Goodwill Retirement Community. Thayer — whose husband, the late Frederick A Thayer III, was a distinguished Garrett County jurist — was 90 years old.
Joseph Raymond “Joe” Stevens
Stevens, Joseph Joseph Raymond "Joe" Stevens, 80, of Grantsville, MD, passed from this life on Monday, July 15, 2024, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, WV. Born June 26, 1944, in Cumberland, MD, he was the youngest of three children born to James Arthur and Lucille Margaret (Smith) Stevens. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James. A. Stevens, Jr., and his sister Dona (Stevens) Hungerford Smith. Mr. Stevens was a 1962 graduate of Beall High School. He also attended Frostburg State College, playing on the College's first football team. His early employment included the P & K Service Center, Frostburg, MD, and the Celanese Corporation, Cresaptown, MD. He retired from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, New Germany State Park and Savage River State Forest, with thirty-three years of service as a Forest Ranger. He was also a past member of the 365th Supply Company, United States Army Reserves, Cresaptown. Joe was a longtime member and former trustee of the Classy Chassis Car Club. Mr. Stevens is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rebecca Jane (Bowser) Stevens, whom he married on August 20, 1966; his daughter Julie (Stevens) Yoder and husband Dennis, Bittinger, MD; and two grandsons, Derek Yoder and wife Vicki, Oakland, MD; and Andrew Yoder, Bittinger. He is also survived by a number of nephews and nieces: Steve, Tommy, Michael, and Joe Hungerford, Sherri Coppage, Ladona Gorham, and James A. Stevens, III. He is also survived by several lifelong friends and fellow retirees: Rick Lewis, Harold (Mac) MacDonald, and Bob Hershberger; coffee buddies, Fred Holliday and Jim Wilburn; dear friends Jerry and Lori Clise; and many cousins and close friends. A Celebration of Life honoring Joe will be held on Saturday, August 24th at 7:00 p.m. in the Lake House at New Germany State Park, Grantsville, MD. A private interment will be held on the family farm in Preston County, WV. The family has asked friends and family who wish to express their sympathy to plant a tree or send contributions to Northern Garrett Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 293, Grantsville, MD 21536 or to Bittinger Vol. Fire Department/EMS, 176 Brenneman Road, Bittinger, MD, 21522, in Joe's memory. Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller Street, Grantsville, is assisting Joe's family with his arrangements.
