Maryland State Police investigate fatal crash in Frederick County
FREDERICK, Md. — Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash in Frederick County Tuesday. Troopers responded to Maryland Route 491 just after 7:35 a.m. for reports of a crash involving a tractor-trailer. The driver of the vehicle and sole occupant was pronounced dead at the scene by Frederick County first responders.

ERIE, Pa, -The Somerset Patriots downed the Erie SeaWolves 9-3 on Wednesday afternoon in game two of a six-game series at UPMC Park. LHP Ben Shields (7 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 8 K) earned his first Double-A win, hurling a career-long 7 IP of one-run ball. In his first two Double-A starts, Shields has allowed 1 ER over 12.1 IP (0.73 ERA) with 13 K and only 7 H. Over his last six starts between Somerset and High-A Hudson Valley since the start of June, Shields has pitched to a 1.61 ERA over 39 IP with 50 K/10 BB. Shields has struck out 5+ in each of his last seven starts.

Freda Grace Aurndt, 93, Garrett, went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 13, 2024 at Meadow View Nursing Center. Born September 24, 1930 in Garrett, daughter of Raymond and Sylvia (Kendall) Mankamyer. Preceded in death by parents, husband Charles, son-in-law Larry Hilliard, great granddaughter Kaylyn Deem, brothers Frederick, Donald, and Harvey Mankamyer, sisters Nancy Mankamyer and Judy Dunmeyer, brother-in-law Emerson Dunmeyer, and sister-in-law Judy Mankamyer. Survived by children: William (Sandra) Aurndt, Cynthia (Michael) Krepelka, and Angela (Brian) Dermer; grandchildren: Tesa (Fred) Deem, Trisha (Greg) Kaylor, Jolene (Jason) Stiffey, Jana Krepelka (Joe Glessner), Carrie (Kevin) Bittner, Weston Hilliard (McKenzie Glass), Faith (Owan) Kelly, and Wyatt Dermer (fiancée Samantha Ross); great grandchildren: Mason and Warren Stiffey and Waylon and Dawson Kelly; sister Rose (Ronald) Arnold; brothers: David, Dale (Nancy), Doyal (Ruthie), Clay (Mary Alice), and Lynn (Mary Ann) Mankamyer; sisters-in-law Joan and Janet Mankamyer; and numerous nieces and nephews. She attended Berlin Brothersvalley High School. Member of Beachdale Church of the Brethren where she was an active member and past President of the Women’s Fellowship group, taught Sunday school, and was a past church board member. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and taking care of her family. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Deaner Funeral Home, Berlin. James Edward Ash
James Edward Ash, 83, of Lincoln Twp., died July 12, 2024 at his residence. Born July 17, 1940, in Jefferson Twp, he is the son of the late Charles and Evelyn (Burket) Ash. Also preceded in death by a daughter Tammie Arntz, 3 grandchildren, Emma Jo Gordon, Candice Marie Ash and Evelyn Marie Ash and one great granddaughter Posie Elizabeth Foy. Siblings, Ruth Peterson, Janet Walker, Betty St. Clair, Wilma Stahl and Donald Ash and son-in-law Earl Beeman. Survived by his wife Mary Esther (Faidley) Ash, children, James Edward Ash Jr., Tina Ash Forney and husband Terry, Jeff Ash and wife Linda and Carolyn Ash Beeman. Also 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Jim was a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church and was a retired farmer where he raised and butchered beef and pigs. He also worked in the maintenance department at Somerset Hospital. Friends will be received from 2-4 & 6-8 Monday in the Robert H. Patriots Notebook 7/9/24: Hitting The Road Before The All-Star Break
Bridgewater, New Jersey – After taking four-of-six ball games last week from Reading in a rare home-and-home series with the Fightin’ Phils, the Patriots are flying high, tied with Akron for the best mark in the Eastern League to open the second half of the season with a 9-3 mark after winning back-to-back series for the first time this season. The recent hot streak has brought the club’s overall mark to 41-40 on the season as they get ready to make the trek out to Erie where they will battle the SeaWolves before heading into the All-Star break.
Schmidt sentenced for crime spree
A New Paris woman who stole a car, crashed the car, stole a gun, then stole another vehicle will spend four years in state prison for her one-woman crime spree on Oct. 27. Victims in the case hope Jessica Schmidt, 31, will get the help she needs, including drug treatment, while she’s incarcerated, according to court statements.
Bedford residents asked to conserve water
As a result of the low flows in the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River, created by the ongoing lack of sustained precipitation in the river’s watershed west of Bedford, the Municipal Authority of the Borough of Bedford is requesting that its customers voluntarily conserve water by taking the following minimum steps (recommended by DEP):

The Bedford Post 113 American Legion baseball team rebounded from a tough loss on Sunday with a big win over Nanty Glo, 9-4, on Monday. The Hurricanes struck for 4 runs in the bottom of the first and added 2 runs in the second and 3 in the third for their scoring.
Drug defendant pleads guilty
A local man pleaded guilty to charges in five cases including felony counts of drug possession and burglary. The cases against Matthew R. Sabo, 41, of New Paris, were scheduled for jury selection Tuesday in Bedford County Court. Sabo instead entered guilty pleas for one felony count of possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, two third-degree felony counts, one for receiving stolen property one for criminal use of communication facility, and four second-degree felony counts for criminal trespassing.
Schellsbburg man sentenced to treatment program
A Schellsburg man was sentenced to a drug treatment program and probation after previously pleading guilty in theft and DUI cases. Ricky Lee Mock, Jr., was sentenced to an in-patient drug treatment program and 2 years of drug treatment court followed by probation.

BedfordJoseph C. “Bud” Ritchey Jr., 96, of Bedford, died on Wednesday July 10, 2024, at Bedford Skilled Nursing. He was born on August 20, 1927, in Bedford, a son of the late Jospeh C. and Grace Edna (May) Ritchey Sr. On October 28, 1966, in Bedford, he married Florence “Flo” (Koontz) Ritchey who preceded him in death on July 27, 2019.
