Maryland State Police investigating inmate death at Allegany County prison
CUMBERLAND, Md. — Maryland State Police are investigating an inmate death that happened in an Allegany County prison Saturday afternoon. The inmate, identified as 80-year-old Ralph Ruark, was serving time at the Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland. He was declared dead by EMS around 3:30 p.m., and was then taken to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to determine the cause and manner of death.
Five earn Hoffman scholarships
Five students from Bedford and Fulton counties received Dr. Roy D. Hoffman Scholarship Awards during a recent ceremony in Everett. The 2024 award recipients are Asah Barkman, Isabella Hillegass, Ian Klahre, Reese Sherwood and Molly Mellott. Leslie and Donald Hoffman presented the awards.

DAR finishes busy spring
The Bedford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution had a busy spring. At the March 26 meeting, Cheryl Wilson, whose patriot is Nathaniel Lewis, was welcomed as a new member. The group donated $50 to the Bedford Master Gardeners to help with beautification at the Bedford Library. Sgt. First Class Sarah Garcia presented the program.

Students present piano recital
The students of Cheryl Hoover Piano Studio presented a spring recital for family and friends in late April. The students performed before a full house at Colonial Hills Baptist Church. Selections included pop, Disney, blues, Broadway and classical. Plaques and performance certificates were presented after the program. Senior Avrey Weaverling was recognized and presented with gifts. Students and guests enjoyed light refreshments following the program. Benbow excelled in 3 sports and at IUP football
James Benbow began his journey into varsity sports as a freshman at Everett High School playing basketball, football and track & field. As a freshman and sophomore he made it to the Basketball State Playoffs and was on the All-Tournament Team at the Northern Lebanon Tournament. During his sophomore year he threw discus and placed second at the Bedford District 5 Track & Field meet. He was selected to the Keystone State Games for basketball.

For the third straight year, the Erie SeaWolves are headed to the playoffs. The SeaWolves swept a doubleheader in Somerset, New Jersey, on Sunday.
