Maryland officials investigating apparent murder of 80-year-old incarcerated man
CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) — Maryland police are investigating the apparent murder of an 80-year-old man incarcerated in state prison over the weekend, officials said Sunday. Inmate Ralph Ruark was declared dead just before 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland, state police said in a news release. Officials did not disclose how Ruark died.

Clarence Gerald Beal
Clarence Gerald Beal, 90, of Somerset, passed away June 24th, 2024 in the comfort of his home. Known to family, church family and close acquaintances simply as “Uncle Jerry”, he leaves behind a rich legacy of good conversation and unique experience. Born November 26th, 1933 to the late James and Rena (Jenkins) Beal, Uncle Jerry joins late siblings William Beal, Carol (Beal) Nightingale, Ronald Beal, Donna (Beal) Atchison, Linda Beal, and infant sister Judy. He leaves behind brother James Beal (Carol) and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and their growing families. Uncle Jerry served his country in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. He had a lengthy career with Sears working in sales and management. He proceeded to build a lakeside home in Virginia which he generously opened to friends and family. While residing there, he was a member of The Lake of the Woods Rescue Squad and an active volunteer with The Salvation Army. He also spent time settling refugee families, some of whom remained in contact over the years. Uncle Jerry always delighted in the lives and accomplishments of his family members. He also treasured service to The Lord as a member of The First Christian Church of Somerset and at several churches in Virginia. A celebration of Life will be held at 4 pm Saturday in the First Christian Church with Reverend Brent Williams officiating. In Lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Salvation Army (334 West Main Street, Somerset). Many thanks to Community Life for their love, care, and support of Uncle Jerry and his family during the twilight of his years on Earth. Arrangements under the direction of the Robert H. Edyth L. Kimmel
Edyth L. Kimmel 93, of Somerset, died June 22, 2024 at Meadow View Nursing Center. Born December 12, 1930 in Conemaugh Twp. She is the daughter of the late James G. and Luella (Layton) Steckman. Also preceded in death by her husband First Sargent James W. Kimmel, son Douglas J. Kimmel Sr., brothers, Howard, James, John and Elmer and sisters, Margaret Kovack, Dana Engle, Mary Metzgar and LaVerne Edmonson Weyandt and friend Melvin Custer. She is survived by daughter-in-law Kay Lynn Kimmel and grandson Douglas J. Kimmel Jr. and fiancé Jarrod J. Piper. Edyth was an avid reader and bird watcher. She enjoyed working puzzles, knitting and involvement in her church. Her greatest enjoyment was her Sunday evening dinners with family. She was “Grandma Kimmel” to all. She leaves behind many wonderful neighbors, friends and family members who meant so much to her. At Edyth’s request there will be no viewing or graveside service. John W. Oldham
John William Oldham, 91, of New Paris, passed away at home on June 21, 2024. He was born on January 22 1933, at home in Reynoldsdale, a son of the late Warren and Marie Oldham. John was preceded in death by his late wife Evelyn Tew, late wife Mildred Carson, son Stuart John, grandson Aaron Oldham and grandson Michael Howsare. He is survived by following children, Joyce Kauffman of New Paris, Barb wife of Dale Miller of New Paris, Debbie wife of Frank Platt of Indiana, Tom husband of Trudi Oldham of Osterburg, Barry Oldham of Florida, Sherry wife of Joel Onstead of Schellsburg and Christina wife of Justin Miller Schellsburg, also stepdaughters, Vickie wife of Bill Piwowarczyk and Teri wife of Brian Barefoot. John was blessed with many grandchildren — Travis McCreary, Jennifer Topka, Amy George, Sammy Thomas, Wesley Kauffman, Jacob Oldham, Marlin Oldham, Carrie Risbon, Hannah Doucen, Frankie Platt, Bill Platt, Trey Cooper, Logan Cooper, Olivia Miller, Natalie Miller, Gavin Miller, Bradley Barefoot, Elijah Barefoot, Josh Aiken, Justin Aiken and Kiley Fadrow. John was also very blessed with many Great Grandchildren.

William F. Valiton
William F. Valiton, 91, of Schellsburg, went from the arms of his beloved wife, to the arms of his Savior peacefully, Friday, June 21, 2024. He was born on October 27, 1932 in Templeton, MA, a son of the late John Fred and Viola (Ford) Valiton. On May 2, 1953, in Orange, MA, he married Constance (Belanger) Valiton who survives along with five children: Linda Haney widow of Carl, of Bedford, Sharon Hershberger and husband Michael, of Schellsburg, Ginnie Valiton, of Bedford, Robert Valiton and wife Cathy, of Belsano, and Rev. Deborah Valiton-Carnish and husband David, of Elizabethtown; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren with one on the way. He was preceded in death by a son John W. Valiton, and a sister Mildred Russell.
