Rockwood Spring Sports Athletes Earn All-Metro Recognition from St. Louis Post-Dispatch
A total of 36 Rockwood School District spring sports student-athletes representing all four high schools earned All-Metro recognition from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. These athletes -- 17 boys and 19 girls -- made the Post-Dispatch All-Metro teams in baseball, golf, lacrosse, soccer, track and field, volleyball, water polo. A total of 15 athletes earned first-team honors -- including Players of the Year Kyle Kubasta (Lafayette High, boys volleyball) and Kylee Pickens (Eureka High, girls lacrosse) -- 12 earned second-team recognition, and nine were named to the third team.
Everett fire
Fire crews from across Bedford and neighboring counties responded to a dwelling fire in the 200 block of West Main Street in Everett shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday. A partial list of those assisting Everett included Bedford, Breezewood, Southern Cove, Alum Bank, Shawnee Valley, Saxton, Martinsburg, Roaring Spring and McConnellsburg, while Hyndman and Orleans, Md., were among those alerted for standby duty, and Raystown and Bedford Area EMS also respondedd. Radio transmissions from the scene indicated that manpower was a problem, an a general call for assistance was issued. Additional details were not immediately available, although the state police fire marshal was requested at the scene and the Red Cross was notified to assist those displaced by the fire.

Ray E. Lee, Jr., 78, of Everett, passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at home. He was born on November 9, 1945 in Meyersdale, PA; a son of the late Ray E. Lee Sr. and Mabel (Gerhardt) Deshong. On October 16, 1973, in Winchester, VA; he was united in marriage to Joy L. Lee. She preceded him in death on June 18, 2024.

Man arrested for possessing firearms
A Bedford man is facing 11 counts of possession of a firearm by a person prohibited after state parole officer found a gun in his residence. Duane Joseph Hann, 47, of Egolf Road, was jailed on the second-degree felony counts, with bail set at $200,000 straight.
Angela Wynne Norton, 70,
Angela Wynne Norton, 70, of Fort Ashby, WV and formerly a long-time resident of Calvert County passed away July 1, 2024. She was born October 2, 1953 in Harrisonburg, VA to Jennings Marshall and Nita Grey (Reamer) Crider. Angela grew up in Adelphi and graduated from High Point High School in 1971. She married Jack “Ronnie” Norton, Jr. on February 6, 1976. They lived in North Beach for 30 years where she became a second mother to many kids. Their house was a safe place for many, and she welcomed anyone. After 30 years in North Beach, Angela and Ronnie moved to Lusby where they lived for 15 years before moving to Fort Ashby, WV in 2019. Angela loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing online games, especially Bingo, Yahtzee, Candy Crush, and Farmville, watching Hallmark Christmas movies and General Hospital, and a cold Coors Light. She will be greatly missed.
Sharon E. (Bohn) Scollo
Sharon E. (Bohn) Scollo, 74, of Manns Choice, died June 19, 2024 after an extended and courageous battle with cancer. She was born on January 21, 1950 in Cumberland, MD, a daughter of the late Lloyd C. and Evelyn L. (Amick) Bohn. She graduated from Bedford High School in 1968 and attended Point Park College in Pittsburgh. She attended the Woodstock Music and Arts Fair in 1969, which was the signature event of her generation. It was billed as “3 days of Peace & Music” and attended by nearly 500,000 young people, with 32 musical acts. It was one of the largest music festivals in history. She later joked that she was invited to go because she was the only one of her friends who had at tent, and because they knew she could cook, and that she would take care of them if something went wrong!

Annual Fourth of July parade held in Friedens
People gathered at the old IXL Creamery in Friedens in Somerset County Thursday morning to hold their annual parade. The tradition began in 1944 when a group of women whose husbands were fighting in the war wanted to get together to do something patriotic, and had their children decorate bikes and wagons to hold a parade.
