Maryland is first state to pass law against gift card draining
Maryland is the first state in the nation to pass a law aimed at thwarting an increasingly common scam known as gift card draining. The Gift Card Scams Prevention Act of 2024, recently signed by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, mandates that gift cards sold in stores be encased in secure packaging so that thieves can't illegally obtain their numbers. Under the new law, merchants that sell gift cards online must register them with the Office of the Attorney General's Division of Consumer Protection, while sellers also must train employees on how to detect gift card fraud. Jordan Swan, 23, Killed Outside Greenbelt Apartment Complex
Shortly before 2 p.m. on July 29, officers were called to the 8500 block of Greenbelt Road to investigate a reported shooting in the area. Upon arrival, they found Jordan Swan outside in an apartment building parking lot suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Body of missing 6-year-old boy with non-verbal autism found in pond
GAITHERSBURG, Md. — The body of a missing 6-year-old boy was pulled from a pond in Gaithersurg Sunday evening, according to Montgomery County Police. Fawzan Hassan, a child with non-verbal autism, had gone missing a little more than 24 hours before. His family said he had last been seen at Bohrer Park on Frederick Avenue Saturday at 3 p.m. Just before 5:30 p.m. Sunday, community members spotted a body in the pond at Bohrer Park, and contacted police. The body was positively identified as Fawzan.
17-Year-Old Sentenced to 35 Years for Wheaton Metro Murder
According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, “In the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, the Honorable Marybeth Ayres sentenced defendant, Emmanuel Simmonds, 17, of Gaithersburg, to life in prison suspend all but 35 years to serve and five years of supervised probation upon release. Judge Ayres recommended that Simmonds be admitted to the Patuxent Youthful Offenders program while incarcerated. The sentencing hearing was held Friday, July 26, 2024.
17 yo killed in shooting inside Maryland suburb shopping mall
A 17-year-old was killed during a shooting inside a shopping mall in a suburb of Baltimore and Washington over the weekend. Police said that the shooting took place in the area of the food court at The Mall in Columbia in Howard County, Maryland on Saturday, with authorities stating that they received a call regarding gunfire in the food court area of the mall at about 6:10 p.m.
