    Records continue to fall as Saints battle in Big South Conference meet

    Congrats to the Saints’ girls and boys track teams as they each placed second at the recent Big South Conference’s large school meet down in Fairmont. The Saints finished runner-up to perennial power Marshall in both meets.

    The Saints will be in action at Gustavus on Wednesday and Friday of this week for the Section 2AA meet, giving local fans a great chance to see these awesome student athletes perform in person!

    St. Peter had 10 Big South Conference event champions in both the boys and girls competition including some record-breaking performances. The following is the list of the Saints’ Big South gold medal winners:

    GIRLS

    400-meter dash — Ella Dirks (59.76)

    800-meter dash — Keira Friedrich (2:23.97)

    4x200 relay — Macey Portner, Rachel Salfer, Lily Prunty, and Noelle Simonette (1:51.3)

    BOYS

    200-meter dash — Derek Guth (22.07)

    110-meter high hurdles — Corbin Herron (14.32)

    300-meter intermediate hurdles — Corbin Herron (38.92)

    4x100 relay — Mohamed Jimale, Elijah Mercado, Isai Morales-Bocanegra, Derek Guth (43.36 — new school record!)

    4x200 relay — Mohamed Jimale, Ramiro Alcantra Alvarez, Isai Morales-Bocanegra, Kemper Ely (1:32.75)

    Shot put — Luke Banks (52’7”)

    Discus — Luke Banks (173’9”)

    Other Saints track & field noteworthy performances

    Keira Friedrich placed second in the 1,600-meter run and set a new school record in a time of 5:04.11. Earlier this season she also set the school record in the 800-meter run in a clocking of 2:15.78, which beat the record set by teammate Ella Dirks in the heat before at the true team meet in a time of 2:16.42.

    Luke Banks set the school record in the discus with a toss of 189’1” (Rick Lager — 171’4 in 1976) earlier this season and his personal best of 54’7” in the shot put this season is the second-longest throw in SPHS history (Rick Lager — 54’9.5” in 1975).

    Annika Magelee also broke the pole vault record at the Big South Conference meet with a jump of 10’1 and then also clearing 10’4” The previous record of 10-feet was co-held by Marie Annexstad (2011) and Addison Landsom (2023).

    The Section 2AA track and field Championships will take place Wednesday and Friday, May 29 and 31, at Gustavus Adolphus College with day one beginning at 3 p.m. and Friday’s contest beginning at 10 a.m.
