Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum Prepares For the Opening of a New WWI Gallery [READY FOR EDITING]
Starting in 2015, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum (NASM), located on the National Mall in the heart of Washington, D.C., has been undergoing the most extensive renovation in its history since the building’s opening on July 1, 1976. In that time, numerous aircraft, spacecraft, and other artifacts both large and small have been transported to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia, for storage and evaluation before their return to downtown D.C. While half of the museum’s galleries have since been reopened since the fall of 2022, the remaining half of the museum is still a further two years from completion, but already, iconic parts of the collection are returning from Udvar-Hazy and are being prepared for long-term display. Among the new galleries set to reopen during this phase is a new iteration of the World War I aviation gallery, now titled World War I: The Birth of Military Aviation. The inside of the gallery will also feature various uniforms, aerial cameras, and other items relating to military aviation of the First World War, some of which have been a part of the Smithsonian since the end of the war itself over a hundred years ago.

Kitty Post: Struggling to Keep Up
Beltsville Community Cats (BCC) has been serving Beltsville and the surrounding communities for over 5 years. During that time we have had a major impact on the community by: 1. Reducing the number of “community” (aka feral) cats in colonies through our trap, neuter, vaccinate, and release program; 2. Socializing hundreds of kittens born outside and facilitating their adoption into “forever” homes; 3. Taking in dozens of abandoned house cats and trying to find them more stable homes; 4. Providing medical care for dozens of injured and ill community cats; and 5. Providing education, training, and support for cat owners and lovers through monthly articles in the Beltsville News, public gatherings such as the Beltsville Festival, and other community events.
