Kirtland at Ashland Crestview football: Preview capsule for Aug. 29 game
Where: Cougar Stadium, 1575 State Route 96, Ashland. Last week: Kirtland def. Dalton, 55-34, Seneca East def. Ashland Crestview, 35-20 For the record: The Lake County ties are strong in this one as Crestview coach Steve Haverdill (a Lake Catholic graduate) welcomes Kirtland, a town in which his mother still lives. Coach Tiger LaVerde notched his 250th career win (against only 30 defeats) in last week’s win over Dalton. Haverdill in his own right has brought Crestview to football prominance, his teams going 43-15 over the past five seasons, including back-to-back 12-1 campaigns in 2021 and 2022. … Kirtland boasts a powerful running game that churned out 506 yards last week against Dalton, with quarterback Jake LaVerde running for 341 yards and three touchdowns and Danny Alfieri scoring four more times. Defense was a question mark, however, with the Hornets surrendering an uncharacteristic 34 points, the most the program has given up since losing to Marion Local, 34-11, in the 2017 state championship game. Look for the Hornets to try and shore up that side of the ball this week. … Crestview running back Ayden Reymer carried 18 times for 138 yards and a touchdown in last week’s loss to Seneca East. Crestview’s defense is led by junior defensive back Dylan Burge, who had 126 tackles a year ago and is one of the top players in the Firelands Conference.
