Millions across the country will spend the first Saturday of August celebrating National Night Out, among the celebrators are Fairview residents.

On Aug. 6 neighbors will gather, getting to know not only each other, but those who keep their neighborhoods safe: the local sheriff’s department.

The first five events registered with the city can invite the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office to visit their block parties, and attendees can receive swag bags with party items and public safety resource information.

Events traditionally offer a classic, summertime cookout feel offering entertainment from live music, water balloon tosses, scavenger hunts and small talk with neighbors while indulging in grilled goodies.

Hosts are invited to “get creative” with how they choose to celebrate a night of comradery, learning who lives around them and who the first responders are in their city.

Past events in Fairview brought bounce castles, a rock climbing wall and live music to the streets surrounding City Hall, transforming the area into a festival-like atmosphere.

National Night Out dates back to 1970 in the western suburbs of Philadelphia. For decades, East Multnomah County has been hosting outings marked with picnics, music and family-friendly activities.
