Independence Day Celebrations set in Morgantown
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The City of Morgantown is ready to welcome area residents to come celebrate Independence Day. A day of family-friendly activities, live music, and 4th of July fireworks will kick off at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Hazel Ruby McQuain Park Amphitheater. City of Morgantown Arts and Culture Director Vincent Kitch encourages residents to come down to the free event that will also include local food vendors and performances from local aerial performers.
Justice: July 5 Official Holiday for Employees of State
Gov. Jim Justice has issued a proclamation, declaring Friday, July 5, 2024, as a full-day state holiday for public employees. "We should all take time to reflect on all the sacrifices made by our veterans and active duty military members this Independence Day," Gov. Justice said. Two Mountain State volunteer fire departments benefit from the Lowes Hometowns program this year
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Lowe’s Home Improvement will perform nearly $200,000 at two volunteer fire department facilities in the state. Catholic Charities presents proposal to host year long triage shelter at Hazel’s House of Hope
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Catholic Charities of West Virginia has offered the City of Morgantown their services to host a year-long emergency triage shelter within city limits. President and CEO of the Catholic Charities of West Virginia, Mark Phillips, presented a request for proposal during Morgantown City Council’s regular meeting Tuesday, where he broke down the cost of the year-long service. This included the minimum number of people that would be required to run the shelter, which organizations would partner in offering services, and which public entities would be required to financially contribute in order to make the shelter a reality.
Morgantown Public Library celebrates 60th Anniversary of the 1964 Civil Rights Act
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) -As Independence Day approaches, it gives us a time reflect on some of the important moments in our countries history that has helped contributed to making the U.S what it is today. One of those crucial moments was signing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The bill, signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, put an end to segregation; and gave Americans the equal opportunity to enjoy public accommodations without being descriminated against based on race, gender, or national origin. Today marks the 60th anniversary of the milestone that changed this country forever, and to honor that the Morgantown Public Library is hosting a celebration this evening. The night will feature local civil rights activists like ‚Al Anderson, who attended the 1963 March on Washington. Charlene Marshall, who helped integrate local restaurants. Not to mention an exhibit that tells the story of the historical act; designed by the community coalition for social justice. Eve Faulkes, the main designer of the exhibit not only wanted to tell the story of the civil rights movement as a national movement, but also a local one.
