Cougar attack witnesses awarded Carnegie Medal for heroism
Four local women credited with saving the life of their friend and fellow cyclist from a 75-pound cougar will receive the Carnegie Medal for heroism. Erica Wolf, Annie Bilotta, Tisch Schmidt-Williams and Aune Tietz were biking along Tokul Creek Trail near Fall City on Feb. 17 when the cougar pounced and latched onto 60-year-old Keri Bergere’s face and jaw.

Chelan County Rape Charges Dropped Against Former Seattle Teacher
A 53-year-old former King County middle school teacher is cleared of wrongdoing in Chelan County after prosecutors dropped charges against him in a rape and assault case. Darren D. Hunter was accused of sexually assaulting a woman at his home in Chelan during a drug deal in July of last year.

Seattle Fire unveils new rescue watercraft as more people head to the shore
SEATTLE - Seattle firefighters are hoping the launch of new rescue equipment will turn back a troubling rise in water deaths. King County has seen elevated drowning numbers over the past four years, with the number of deaths increasing more than 60% since 2018. Now, Seattle firefighters respond to about 70 water rescues a year, according to recent data from the Seattle Fire Department.

SEATTLE – The personal use of fireworks in Seattle and King County is illegal. Even though they are banned, each year fireworks cause fires and injure people in the City and surrounding areas. In 2023, the Seattle Fire Department responded to 58 fireworks-related incidents. Just four years ago in 2020, a significant fire occurred in West Seattle where fireworks ignited dry brush in front of a four-story apartment building and quickly extended to the top floor balcony. Fortunately, no one was injured but several residents were displaced and the total estimated loss was $100,000.
