    Deputies: Felons found with firearm, drugs

    Two men with a prior convictions for a 2019 shooting in Farmville were charged with drug and gun crimes after a K9 unit alerted detectives to illicit materials during a traffic stop in southern Pitt County.

    The Pitt County Sheriff's Office said detectives stopped a vehicle about 6:14 p.m. Jan. 22 after they observed a traffic violation in the area of Davenport Farm Road and Frog Level Road. A police dog on the scene alerted detectives that there were drugs in the vehicle, the office reported.

    Detectives initiated a probable cause search where they found a concealed gun. The vehicle's occupants, Jeremiah Octavious Carmon, 22, of 3687 S. George St., Farmville, and Ashad Elijahjuan Avent, 23, of 4646 N.C. 123, Snow Hill, were also searched and drugs were found on their person.

    Both men were charged with possession of firearm by a felon, possession of schedule I controlled substance, carry concealed gun and felony probation violation. Avent was also charged with possession of cocaine.

    Carmon was booked into the Pitt County Detention Center under a $350,000 secured bond. Avent was given a $125,000 secured bond for the gun and drug charges, but held without bond under his probation violation.

    Both Carmon and Avent have a prior conviction for assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury in the May 29, 2019, shooting of Billy Montreal Holmes on Godwin Drive in Farmville. Reports from the time said that Holmes was shot eight times after an argument over property.

    The pair initially faced charges of attempted murder. Carmon was convicted on Nov. 29, 2021, and released on July 1, 2022. Avent was convicted of the assault on Nov. 7, 2019, and released on Oct. 16, 2023.

    Carmon also has charges pending in Pitt County Superior Court for possession of a stolen firearm, carrying a concealed gun and possession of a firearm by a felon.
