Art gallery anchors at Mount Sequoyah

An art collective with no permanent home found one at Mount Sequoyah.

Why it matters: Fenix Arts is a space for curated fine art where artists can reliably show and sell their work, board chair Susan Idlet told Axios.

How it works: Artists apply to be members, pay $100 annually and volunteer for two four-hour shifts a month to help run the gallery. The gallery takes a 20% commission from the work that sells. Industry standard is about 50%, Idlet said.

    • Artists set their prices to purchase their work.
    • The gallery has about 35 members.

The intrigue: The setting turned out to be convenient for the gallery, Idlet said. While the gallery has set hours Thursday through Sunday, Fenix has the flexibility to open during events at Mount Sequoyah so people unfamiliar can come take a look.

    • Exhibits rotate every five to six weeks and usually have a theme. The gallery also hosts art classes and the occasional concert.

Background: Many of the artists originated from the former Fayetteville Underground gallery back in 2017 and spent a few years showing their work in temporary spots like the now-closed Stage 18 in downtown Fayetteville.

    • Fenix became a nonprofit in 2020, making it eligible for more grant funding, and moved to the gallery at Mount Sequoyah three years ago.
