FEDERAL HEIGHTS, Colo. (KDVR) — What is considered one of the most dangerous roads in Federal Heights will soon have new cameras that will ticket drivers.

The new speed ticket cameras will go up in the area near West 92nd Avenue near North Tejon Street. Federal Heights police say this is one of the worst roads in the city.

“Since I’ve been here, we had had a couple of fatalities there. This is the same location where we had a pedestrian that was struck by a car at a high rate of speed,” Federal Heights Police Chief Robert Grado said.

The number of cameras that will go up and where they will be placed is not clear at this point. But the chief says they will target the most dangerous drivers.

“The issues we have had is not with your everyday speeder. It’s with people literally just racing their cars down the hill. The last couple of accidents we have had have been devastating. One we had was (driving) more than a hundred miles an hour,” Grado said.

The City of Federal Heights plans to start a campaign to let the public know about the new traffic enforcement technique. Grado says the cameras are already being used in other Colorado cities.

“These are mounted to poles and they take a picture of the license plate of the vehicle, the person driving the vehicle and it gets a picture of the vehicle going in the opposite direction,” Grado said.

Over the weekend a car was sliced in half after it hit a pole and a fence on 92nd Ave. The driver, who police say was driving at a high rate of speed, was killed.

A single-vehicle crash ended with the car split in two at the intersection of West 92nd Avenue and North Tejon Street.

The police chief told FOX31 Problem Solvers there have been at least two fatalities in the area over the last year and a half.

FOX31 is also told mobile photo radar speed cameras will be used at multiple traffic hotspots in Federal Heights. Red light cameras will also be placed at intersections around the city.

The city council unanimously approved purchasing the traffic enforcement tools, according to Grado.

People who live here have been asking that something be done to make the roadway safer. The chief said some of the new cameras should be going up in the next four to six months .
