Gladstone wins, Esky falls short in Little League district openers
QUINNESEC — Gladstone faced off against Iron Mountain and Escanaba faced Kingsford in Little League All-Stars on Friday in Quinnesec. Gladstone beat Iron Mountain 3-1, while Kingsford hammered Escanaba 18-3. Gladstone and Iron Mountain remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Scout Rosinski hit a double to centerfield and Logan Demay followed it up with an RBI single to put Gladstone up 1-0. “It felt really good,” Demay said. “We have practiced a lot for this and we were ready.”
Channing holds annual Independence Day parade
CHANNING, Mich. (WLUC) - The town of Channing was filled with cheers during their annual parade Saturday. The Sagola Township Fire Department hosted the Independence Day parade. The procession was filled with fire trucks, police vehicles, and floats from local businesses. Floats threw candy into the crowd while the fire department handed out popsicles. Community members of all ages gathered to watch the parade. The department’s assistant fire chief Rand Hruska said the parade is not only a celebration, but also a reunion.
Steel City FC come out flying, soar past Niagara 1812, 8-0, to clinch NPSL’s Great Lakes Conference regular season top spot
Steel City FC left no doubt by scoring early and often in an 8-0 rout of Niagara 1812 at Founders Field on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Steel City capped the regular season with a unbeaten record to clinch first place in National Premier Soccer League’s Great Lakes Conference, and will be the number one overall seed in the conference’s upcoming postseason tournament.
Lions Club hosts 59th annual Bass Fest for good cause
CRYSTAL FALLS, Mich. (WLUC) - The Crystal Falls community came out in full force for Bass Fest. The 59th annual Bass Festival began Saturday morning with a parade. Local businesses and organizations showed off their floats to the crowds lining the streets. After the parade, the festival continued with a canoe race, car show, concessions, and a volleyball tournament. Each year, the festival is put on by the Crystal Falls Lions Club. Funds raised will help the nonprofit give back to those in need. Lions Club member David Lesandrini said the parade is a great time for a good cause.

CRYSTAL FALLS — Warren Maki, 85, passed away July 1, 2024 at UP Health Systems in Marquette. Visitation will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal church in Crystal Falls on July 13 at 10 a.m. followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. Burial will take place at the Hematite Cemetery in Amasa. Memorials may be made to Amasa Senior Center and the Northwoods Animal Shelter in Iron River. Warren’s family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of UPHS for the loving care and compassion to Warren and his family. Condolences to the family of Warren Maki may be expressed online at www.nashfuneralhome.net. The family has entrusted the Nash Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Crystal Falls with the arrangements.
