A union picnic for the ages
How big was IBEW Local 48’s member appreciation picnic this year? It’s almost hard to describe. Event organizer Tracey Powers estimates over 4,000 union electricians and family members attended the five-hour event July 14. It was so many that the overflow parking at the nearby Carpenters union training center also overflowed.

Two Inmates Plead Guilty to Assault on Correctional Officer at USP Atwater, Face Potential 20-Year Sentence
Two inmates, Daniel Higgins of Morro Bay and Austin Noblitt of Portland, admitted guilt yesterday to assaulting a correctional officer at USP Atwater, a high-security federal prison located in Merced County. The assault, which occurred within the forbidding walls of the penitentiary, left the unnamed officer with facial lacerations serious enough to necessitate hospital care, as affirmed by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Crews battle fire at homeless camp under SW Naito Parkway overpass ramp
PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - Portland Fire & Rescue responded to a campsite on fire under an overpass ramp in the downtown area Friday morning. Around 10:30 a.m., PF&R was called out to 7805 South Water Avenue, an area on Southwest Naito Parkway under the Marquam Bridge, for a fire and report of propane tanks exploding.

On top of losing two vessels, and temporarily a third, in one day on our Anacortes/San Juan Islands route to mechanical issues, we’ve seen an increase in crewing cancellations due to health-related relief requests and vacation leave. This temporary setback is difficult to digest, especially since we recently had our first week with no canceled sailings due to crewing since the pandemic began.
